Semioctics
Study of signs and symbols
When you see a sign or a symbol it has meaning
Objects are given meaning and value by society
Time is not an object its a concept
You can then assume things about the place or person from the object
Society names items such as the chair
Different chairs have different meanings. such as an electric chair and a throne
Denotation is what it is
Pink is pink
A rusty chair is a rusty chair
Connotation is what you think when you see the object
When you see the colour red you think danger, love, heat etc.
When you see something like a cheeseburger you think of unfit people and maybe even americans
You can get connotations from people as well such as marilyn monroe
She represents beauty, glamour, stardom etc.
Other cultures have different connotations
In britain you wear white and you think peace, innocence, weddings etc
In china you wear white and you think of mourning and funerals
