Resumen del Recurso

Enzymes
  1. Are part of the protein group
    1. Proteins are made of amino acids
    2. Act as biological catalysts
      1. Control the speed of all chemical reactions in organisms
      2. Anabolism: Reactions that synthesise larger molecules from smaller ones
        1. Reactions that break down large molecules into small molecules
        2. Enzymes are specific
          1. One enzyme catalyses only one specific reaction
            1. They all have the ending 'ase'
          2. Lock-and-key model
            1. The shape of an enzyme in an area known as its active site corresponds to that of a substance it catalyses
            2. Factors that affect enzyme activity:
              1. Warmer temp= faster reaction. Can denature above 40 degrees.
                1. pH: optimum= 7. Can denature if too extreme
                2. Co-factors: many enzymes need another molecule to assist
