Resumen del Recurso
Skeletal System
Joints
Ball and Socket
Synovial joints are built to cut down on friction.
Shoulder
These joints allow movement in all different directions
The end of the bones are covered in cartilage which acts as a shock absorber.
Hinge
Fibruous
These are fixed joints.
Cranium
Hinge
Only allow movement up and down not side to side.
Elbow.
Joints are held together by ligaments
Tendons hold muscles and bone together.
Ligamentous
Allow only little movement
Spine
Main Functions
Shape, movement, protection, support, blood cell production and calcium storage.
Shape and support is important in sport. shape can give good structure and hold organs in place.
Without all our bones and joints we wouldn't be able to move.
Blood cells are produced in the centre of our bones. Without blood cells we wouldn't be able to function and would be come very ill.
Calcium is what makes us strong, we can store this in our bones so we are at less risk of out bones becoming brittle.

Injuries
Compound break
AKA open break- bone protrudes the skin.
Medical attention needed.
AKA closed fracture- bone doesn't protrude skin.
Simple fracture
Strain- only on tendons.
Sprain-on ligaments and muscles.
Osteoporosis
Low bone density leaves bones brittle.
Weight bearing sports- running, jogging, dance, football.
Non weight bearing sports- swimming.
Vitamin D needed.
Movement
Abduction- moving a away from the centre line.
Adduction- moving towards the centre line.
Flexion- making the angle at a joint smaller.
Extension- making the angle at a joint bigger
Rotation-moving a joint in all directions.
