Testing for alkenes
Bromine water is used to tell the difference between an alkane and an alkene. An alkene will turn brown bromine water colourless as it reacts with the double bond. Bromine water remains brown in the presence of an alkane as there is no double bond.

Viscosity
Nota:
Viscosity is used to describe the 'lack of fluidity' of a substance. Syrup is very viscous, but water has a low viscosity, i.e. it is 'runny'.
The viscosity of longer chain hydrocarbon fractions is due to the large molecular masses, which these fractions have.
