  1. Infancy- birth-18 months
    1. Trust vs Mistrust
      1. Children develop a sense of trust when caregivers provide reliability, care and effection
        1. A lack of this leads to mistrust
    2. Early childhood- 2-3 years
      1. Autonomy vs Shame & Doubt
        1. Children need to develop a sense of personal control over physical skills and a sense of independence, leading to feelings of autonomy.
          1. Failure results in feelings of shame and doubt
      2. Preschool- 3-5 years
        1. Initiative vs Guilt
          1. Children need to begin asserting control and power over the environment. Success leads to a sense of purpose.
            1. Trying to exert too much power experience disapproval, resulting in guilt
        2. School age- 6-11 years
          1. Industry vs Inferiority
            1. Children need to cope with new social and academic demands. Success leads to a sense of competence
              1. Failure leads to feelings of inferiority
          2. Adolescence- 12-18 years
            1. Identity vs Role Confusion
              1. Teens need to develop a sense of self and personal identity. Success leads to an ability to stay true to yourself.
                1. Failure leads to role confusion and a weak sense of self
            2. Young Adulthood- 19-40 years
              1. Intimacy vs Isolation
                1. Young adults need to form intimate, loving relationships with other people. Success leads to strong relationships
                  1. Failure results in loneliness and isolation
