Lymphocytes

Origin and Development
1. Positive Selection
  1. ensures survival of lymphocytes that react against antigens. These proliferate and form clones.
2. Negative Selection
  1. eliminates clones that react against self-antigens
B and T cells
1. originate in bone marrow
2. move to primary lymphatic organs where they mature into functional cells.
  1. B cells to bone marrow
  2. T cells to thymus
3. secondary lymphatic organs interact with each other which produces the immune response
Activation
1. must be able to recognize the antigen and destroy it.
2. Antigenic determinants: specific regions of antigen recognized by lymphocytes
3. Antigenic Receptors (T and B cell receptors)
  1. surface of lymphocyte that combines with antigenic determinant
4. MHC complex
  1. glycoprotein molecules which have a variable region that bind to foreign and self antigens
