      1. 20 proteins in blood circulation

          1. Form membrane attack complexes. (MAC) These make channels through the plasma membrane
            1. attach to surface of bacterial cells which stimulates phagocytosis.
              1. Attract immune system to site of infection and promote inflammation
              2. Classical or Alternative pathway
                1. alternative: - innate immunity. C3 binds with the foreign substance which attracts macrophages.
                  1. classical: adaptive immunity. Requires antibodies to produce antigens.
                2. Interferons
                  1. Prevent viral infection
                    1. Produced by infected cell but cause the neighboring cells to produce antiviral proteins.
