Authentic Ways to Develop Performance-Based Activities
  1. Introduction
    1. Students participate in performing tasks or activities that are meaningful and engaging.
      1. Purpose
        1. To help students acquire and apply knowledge, practice skills, and develop independent and collaborative work habits.
        2. Benefits
          1. Active students absorb and understand the material at a much deeper level.
          2. Assesment
            1. Complex and time-bound.
          3. Expectations
            1. Creativity and Innovation
              1. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
                1. Communication and Collaboration
          4. Clear Expectations
            1. Performance-based activities can be challenging
              1. They need to understand from the beginning exactly what is being asked of them and how they will be assessed.
              2. Observation
                1. To provide students with feedback to improve performance.
              3. Presentations
                1. One way to have students complete a performance-based activity is to have them do a presentation or report.
                  1. Basis for the presentation
                    1. Providing information
                      1. Teaching a skill
                        1. Reporting progress
                          1. Persuading others
                        2. Students may choose to add visual aids to help illustrate elements.
                        3. Portfolios
                          1. They can include items that students have created and collected over a period.
                            1. Reflections can be included too
                            2. Some professors have students select those items they feel represents their best work to be included in a portfolio.

                                1. Students can use them later in their academic careers.

                                1. It can take time, so there must be a clear pacing guide
                                  1. Developing the criteria and the rubric and sharing these with students before evaluating a dramatic performance is critical.
