  1. Why
    1. Europe and the USA were far too modernised. They would "crush" Russia in 10 year if nothing was done
      1. All the minerals were in Siberia and the Urals. Too cold+ uninhabited there
        1. All the money was with a pocketful of rich. Rest were poor
          1. Transport+ communication were poor
            1. Unskilled + poorly educated workers
            2. First plan : 1928-33
              1. Targets
                1. Double coal and oil production.
                  1. Triple iron, steel and electricity production
                  2. New cities like Magnitogorsk and Sverdlovsk are created in Siberia and the Urals
                  3. Second plan: 1933-37
                    1. Heavy industry still important
                      1. More mining for: lead, tin, zinc..
                        1. New railways and canals
                          1. New Moscow underground
                            1. More agriculture objects production
                            2. Third plan: 1938-WW2
                              1. Switch to consumer goods
                                1. BUT world war 2 cut it short in 1940

                                  1. From 12 million tonnes to 21 to 29
                                    1. =240% increase
                                  2. Coal
                                    1. 35 million tonnes to 64 to 128
                                      1. = 360% increase
                                    2. Iron
                                      1. From 3 million tonnes to 6 to 14.5
                                        1. = 440% increase
                                      2. Electricity
                                        1. From 5 million kwh to 13.5 to 36
                                          1. = 720% increase
