                                                    1. Decrease the activity of the brain
                                                      1. Slows down your responses of the nervous system. This then causes slow reactions and poor judgement of speed and distances.
                                                        1. This is why drink driving is very very dangerous.
                                                    2. Stimulants
                                                      1. Nicotine / caffeine
                                                        1. Opposite of depressants.
                                                          1. Often used to treat depression.
                                                          2. Increases the activity of the brain
                                                          3. Increases the amount of neurotransmitters at some neurone synapses.
                                                            1. Increases the speed of reaction. Makes you more alert and awake.
                                                            2. Painkillers.
                                                              1. Narcotics like morphine.
                                                                1. Decrease feelings of pain.
                                                                  1. Different painkillers work in different ways.
                                                                    1. E.g morphine blocks out the nerve impulses in the brain and is very strong.

                                                                        1. Distort what is seen or heard by altering the pathways nerve impulses normally travel along.
