        3. Manchurian Incident (1931)
          1. Sept. 1931: Kwatung Army in Manchuria attempts military takeover, replacing warlord
            1. Shanghai: Massive boycott of all Japanese goods and trades
              1. Many wanted to kick out Japanese but Chiang wanted a united front under the Guomindang first
            2. 1936: Extermination campaign against the communists in Yan'an
              1. 1936: North-Eastern Army commander Zhang made an unofficial agreement with CCP for peace so Japanese could be fought together
                1. December 1936: Chiang Kaishek found out about agreement but was captured in Xi'An by Zhang and Mao
                  1. Dec. 1936: Chiang released after two weeks in return for peace and a united front against Japan
