1945 - Potsdam Conference said Korea would be independent after liberation from Japanese
1945 - military division of Korea

1947 - Joint Commission negotiations broke down
1947 - Truman encourages elections (he know Rhee will win)
1. Rhee doesn't want them - he wants to control all of Korea
2. Stalin refuses
UN Temporary Commission on South Korea (UNTCOK) agree for elections to be held no later than March1948
1948 - UN supervise elections in South
1. Rhee wins
1948 - Division of Korea (along 38th parallel) becomes permanent
1948 - New government in North Korea under Kim
1. Democratic People's Republic of North Korea
1948 - Republic of Korea set up under Rhee
1948 - Soviet troops withdraw from NK
1948 - America offer SK $150 mil
1. Make them rich so they favour capitalism
1949 - NATO created
1949 - Kim asks Stalin on two occasions to help NK attack SK
1. Stalin refuses
1949 - US troops withdraw from SK
1. No foreign troops in Korea
