    1. New organisation; took monastic vows to live a priestly life but wore no monastic habits
      1. They were the first members to give away all their property in order to live in total poverty
        1. Their work included; preaching, caring for the sick & setting an example of how a priest should live
          1. They were a tough & disciplined group
            1. WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT?
              1. They set examples of how priests should live
                1. Future reforming Italian leaders were members
                  1. BUT INFLUENCE WAS LIMITED
                    1. Demands were so high-so little recruitment
                      1. Some people were taken out because it was thought that they could not keep up with the demands of this order
                        1. No more than 30 members
                          1. Two houses in 1557
                            1. Concept was too limited to have a great impact
