Resumen del Recurso
THE CAPUCHINS 1528
Good example of a new order that developed from an old one
Franciscan Observant > division from the Franciscan Order
Capuchins were reformed Franciscan Observants
Lived in small communities, in basic huts (away from town centres)
Rejected fine town churches that Franciscans built
Lived a life in extreme poverty & prayer
Sleep, food & comfort were deliberately limited-begging was a last resort
Extreme example attracted more support & popularity
Ministry was the poorest in society
Well known for seeking out those most desperate through disease, sickness & family breakdown
Service towards the sick was legendary in the North of Italy - they fearlessly served plague victims with no thought of their well-being
Capuchins were hated by the Franciscan Observants (almost abolished them in 1534)
Failed because of the support of Pope Clement VII's niece, Duchess of Camerin
IMPORTANCE?
Hard to assess - not much documentary evidence available
By 1640, there were 30,000 members & 1,500 religious houses
Preaching, standards of life & charity must have had an impact on strengthening the Catholic Church
'They restored the confidence of many Catholics in their Church' - K.Randell
Established around Matteo da Bascio - wished to follow the example of St Francis & preach the Gospel in a simple & direct manner to people
Bascio wore a pointed hood (cappuccino) which imitates his saintly approach
Their vicar-general, Bernardino Ochino left & became Protestant in 1541 - this did not affect them
