Though single coaching session can bring in motivation, but all habits
die hard. So, we should adopt a structure that ensures that groundwork
‘=basis/foundation’ is laid towards effective action. plans are worked out, the
client is supported through new challenges and old habits are being replaced by
new ones.
It
takes around 6 weeks to break an old habit and another 6 to ingrain a new one.
So, the ideal coaching program time length is around 3 months, 6 months if
sessions are less frequent.
sessions shouldn't be more than 1-2 wks apart
there are 4 diff types of sessions
on
avrg, lengths bet half an hour and hour and a half, coach and client should
agree in advance and the coach ensures they adhere to.
at
the end of the session allow time to arrange for the next session.
feel comfortable to allow a session to run more than expected as long as
both of u agree
Introductory Session
1- Explain coaching benefits
2- Decide to proceed
Nota:
to develop relationship wz client
3- Find out clients goals
Nota:
is fundamental
can change in mid program as new insight has come in
some ppl are not sure abt goals maybe they have mission statemnt but if
theyr not sure of where theyr going, they wont be motivated
so
if u ask ppl whats ur goal and spendan hour or so to coach them how to reach
their goal. its perfectly possible that the wrong goal is set instead and
therefore time is wasted. so its better to start by knowing the current reality
of everything thats happening in their life. not just the problem areas but the
good stuff too. GROW model nin manual reality section. then ask them to outline
the options they have for possible goal: ‘what would u want to have happened
now?’
focus first on 5 years then a year then bring it down to what they could
achieve the next 3 months. many ppl want to set a big career goal or big
business goal but if part of their lives are holding them back such as fitness
levels or relationships then these would act as an anchor through whole coaching
method dragging them backwards.
if
we get several goals holistically covering the whole life instead of jsut one
area then they are much more likely to succeed and once u have a list of goals ,
usually 2-7, then just ask the client to prioritize them. if session is at least
1 hr long, take 2-3 goals to be comfortable with them. complex goals every
session, simple ones every now and then. its not un common for ppl to achieve a
goal that they thought would take months, in a matter of weeks. reaching the
clarity to identify goals is sometimes what is needed to achieve them, 2-3
inspiring goals in introductory session.
Focus 1st on 5 years then a year then
bring it down 2 the next 3 months
Strategic Session
Taking a goal 1 @ a time
& brainstorming wz z client
on how 2 achieve them
Nota:
one simple q:
‘can u tell me what steps you need to take in order to reach ur
goal?’
ur
client will come up with a no. of actions. ur job is to assist to sort these
actions into categories. 3-10 broad categories. then ask him to put them in some
chronological order. where possible use clients own words but here u can
deliberately suggest words unlike other coaching sessions
ex:
for someone to change a career
u’ll ask what actions, they may come up with 56-60 to 100 actions. ur
job to categorize them and bring them down in some chronological list that looks
like a strategy.
1-create a personal vision
2-
asses the current reality
3-
create a realistic time schedule
4-
research what's out there
5-
create a good CV
6-
identify potential companies
7-
contact them
8-
get the job
9-
celebrate achievement
all
these things could be that orderly realistic strategy that u and ur clients can
go through in a well ordered manner throughout ur sessions in order to achieve
the goal. some clients wont come up wz strategies like create a personal vision
or celebrate achievement but they add inspiration and motivation to the journey
THEN ask what actions
would they like z 1st step 2 b
Nota:
IF
u set a few actions after each goal, the clients will come up with the sense of
achieving something tangible from the planning session and also of being on
their pathway of achieving the goal.
we
have explored the process of setting actions in the ‘W’ section of the ‘GROW’
model
Intermediate Session
From 2nd session onwards work wz
clients 2 move towards their goals
Nota:
additionally add a deeper level of awareness, new understandings and insight,
and self knowledge for the changes required.
accountability, responsibility for their actions
coach: reviewing their actions and signposting their way forwards
towards new actions, offer support
1ry
tool is grow model
@ z end of z session give +ve feedback
2 keep'em going towards z next session
Final Session
2 see how far they have come/celebrate
achievement & provide closure 4 z program
Nota:
use planner in manual to review the relationship
Finally ask'm how close they r 2
reaching their goal/give plenty of +ve
feedback whether or not they reached
Nota:
ask them if they want to record new insights in case they need them again
if
u feel appropriate, send thank u note to celebrate
