Phospholipase C Pathway
  1. PLC is a membrane-assoiciated enzyme
    1. Activated by the G-protein that it is located close to.
    2. are 2 second messengers associated with this pathway:
      1. 1,2- diacylglycerol (DAG)
        1. inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP3)
          1. Both of these can freely diffuse in the cytosol
            1. IP3 opens Ca2+ channels in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane.
              1. causes a rise in intracellular Ca2+
                1. recruits Protein Kinase C (PKC) to the plasma membrane
                  1. DAG activates PKC
                    1. The activated membrane-assoiciated kinase can phosphorylate cellular enzymes and receptors (altering their activity).
                2. ER stores get depleted
                  1. So, proteins assoiciated with the IP3-gated Ca2+ channels open store-operated Ca2+ channels in the plasma membrane
                    1. This allows influx of extracellular Ca2+
                      1. Balanced :D
              2. both arise from the cleavage of phosphatidyl inositol 4,5-biphosphate (PIP2)
              3. on activation, PLC cleaves a membrane phospholipid called PIP2, yielding 2 second messengers:
