The Judiciary
  1. Responsible for adjudication of the law
    1. Involved in the interpretation of the constitution
      1. If laws are unclear Judges interpret what the law means
      2. Trusted because they are independent and incorruptible
        1. Typical Background
          1. Practised at the bar
            1. Born into professional middle class families
              1. Educated at public schools and Oxbridge
                1. Wealthy and Conservatives
              2. Responsible for all matters of criminal crime
                1. Deliver appropriate sentences
                2. Uphold the will of the legislature
                  1. Must be independent from other branches of government
                    1. No political influence or pressure and the system can function freely
                      1. Should be no interference from govt of the day
                      2. Independence protected in 3 ways
                        1. the way in which judges are selected
                          1. their security of tenure
                            1. appointed for life, serve until retirement
                            2. political neutrality
