PAST SIMPLE AND PAST CONTINIOUS

When do we use it?
1. Past Simple
  1. Action in the past taking place once
  2. Never or several times actions in the past taking place one after the other
  3. Action in the past taking place in the middle of another action
  4. If sentences type II (If I talked, …)
  5. FORM
    1. For irregular verbs, use the past form (see list of irregular verbs, 2nd column). For regular verbs, just add “ed”.
    2. POSITIVE: I spoke
    3. NEGATIVE: I did not speak
    4. INTERROGATIVE: Did I speak?
  6. SIGNAL WORDS
    1. yesterday,
    2. 2 minutes ago
    3. In 1990
    4. Other day
  7. EXCEPTIONS in spelling when adding ed
    1. after a final e only add d love – loved
      1. final consonant after a short, stressed vowel or l as final consonant after a vowel is doubled admit – admitted travel – travelled
        final y after a consonant becomes i hurry – hurried
2. Past Continhuous
  1. Puts emphasis on the course of an action in the past
  2. Two actions happening at the same time (in the past) :
  3. Action going on at a certain time in hte past.
  4. FORM
    1. POSITIVE: :i was speaking / you were speaking
    2. NEGATIVE: I was not speeaking / You were not speaking
    3. INTERROGATIVE: Was I speaking? / Were you speakinig?
  5. SIGNAL WORDS
    1. When
    2. While
    3. As long as
  6. EXCEPTIONS in spelling when adding ing
    1. final e is dropped (but: ee is not changed) come – coming (but: agree – agreeing)
      1. after a short, stressed vowel, the final consonant is doubled, sit – sitting
        l as final consonant after a vowel is doubled (in British English) travel – travelling
        final ie becomes y lie – lying
