Feminist Theory of religion
  1. they see society as patriarchy and religious institution as oppressive, it legitimises women's subordinate position
    1. Evidence of Patriarchy
      1. Organisations- women are more likely to take part in religious activities than men, they are normally in charge of them. Armstrong- priesthood exiles women, marginalising them.
        1. Place of worship- in mosques, men are women are segregated in worship also the imam can only be men, restricting women like in Christianity
          1. sacred text- in Islam while women are mesustrating they cannot take part in worship or touch the holy book
          2. Religious Feminism
            1. Woodhead- women can use Religion to gain grater freedom and respect even if traditional religion is patriarchal
              1. the hijab is seen as a oppressive form of control however it can be seen as a way of liberation, representing their faith.
                1. Evangelical Christians- 'men must respect women'- they use this within the household
