Resumen del Recurso
Neuronal Growth Factors and Neuronal Death
What determines the fate of a cell
Influence of neural growth inducers and inhibitors, which is dependent on cell location in the developing nervous system
Cell proliferation and migration
Migration
Movement of neuron along radial glia
Sonic hedgehog is mainly involved in proliferation step
Neurotrophins mainly involved in survival
Neurotrophins
Types
NGF
Nerve growth factor
BDNF
NT-3
NT-4
Effects
Survival - prevent cell death
Growth - stimulate axonal and dendrite growth
Sprouting - stimulate multiple projections
Boutons are small projections that increase cell density along the nerve
Increase soma size
Promote neuronal differentiation
Stimulate increased production of neurotransmitter
Electrical sensitivity - alter levels and activity of ion channels
Receptors for neurotrophins
Trk ((RTK) receptor tyrosine kinase) receptor family
P75 receptors (common receptor)
Activation of receptor can be activated in different ways
e.g. dimerisation
There can be cross-talk between 2 receptors
Allows for different responses
What happens to neurons that do not succeed in finding the neurotrophins?
Neural cells undergo cell death, usually via apoptosis
How do neurons die?
Apoptosis
Developmental stages
Pathological conditions
Excitotoxic cell death
Hypoxia
Over stimulation by neurotransmitters (e.g. glutamate)
The brain makes new neurons throughout life
Neuronal plsticity
Potential to repair itself after injury or disease
