      1. not allowed own money or property
        1. could only handle enough money to feed family for a week
        2. no political rights
          1. father paid a dowry to husband
            1. if husband divorced wife the money would have to be paid back

            2. women weren't allowed to go out in public unless accompained by a male family member and covered up
              1. played a vital role in the running of the household
                1. in charge of making sure slaves did their jobs
                  1. oversaw spinning and weaving in Gynaikon
                    1. managed store rooms and ensured family had enough food to live off
                      1. produced children
                        1. like the roles considered typical of a woman
