            Nota:

            • examples: EL student ordering at a restaurant, demonstrating basic budgeting skills by completing a unit on banking, demonstrating understanding of fraction concepts by doubling, reducing a recipe, demonstrating understanding of persuasive techniques by creating an advertisement.
            • According to Freeman and Freeman (2014), meaningful use of the L2 increases language acquisition. 
            1. Multiple paths to demonstration

              Nota:

              • Authentic Assessments allow students to demonstrate knowledge in a variety of ways, which allows all types of learners to be successful.
            2. Why should EL teachers use Authentic Assessments?
              1. Assesses language proficiency and content knowledge
                1. Allows for scaffolding and accomodations
                  1. Not one size fits all type assessment
                    1. Includes process and product
                    2. How do we create Authentic Assessments?
                      1. What should students be able to do at the end of the unit?
                        1. Standards
                          1. Decide what indicates the standard was met.

                            Nota:

                            • AA can take into account a student's current English level. Can a student demonstrate content knowledge by creating a collage, answering W questions, using oral language to order in a restaurant? AA offer opportunities for EL students to demonstrate knowledge in a variety of ways.

                                    1. Traditional Assessments are multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false tests.
                                      1. Traditional- teach concept and then develop test
                                        1. Authentic Assessments- plan assessment and then instruction
                                          1. Authentic assessments mirror what citizens do to show they know how to do something.
                                          2. Assessing EL students
                                            1. High Stakes Testing

                                              Nota:

                                              • EL students are required to participate in High Stakes testing. Newcomer students do not have to take the reading portion of state mandated tests if they have been in the US for less than one year.
