2. Against
  1. Sex should be open to the possibility of conception (purpose for procreation)
  2. Not fulfilling "be fruitful and multiply" (Genesis 1)
  3. Encourages promiscuity
3. Methods: pill, morning-after pill, condoms, IUD (coil), sterilisation, vasectomy
Divorce
1. Roman Catholics allows annulment but "a ratified and consummated marriage cannot be dissolved by any human" (Catechism)
2. Church of England allows (sometimes) divorce and remarriage
3. "Anyone who divorces his wife (except in the case of unfaithfulness- Mark5) and marries another commits adultery" (Mark 10)
4. Quakers allow divorce as it is a matter of the courts and the Church only deals with spiritual matters
5. Scottish Presbyterian Church allows divorce as marriage is not a sacrament nor forever-binding but a life-long agreement
Marriage
1. Sex before Marriage
  1. Quakers: adultery distorts scared purpose of marriage but sin can be forgiven
  2. Roman Catholics: purpose of sex is for procreation "sexual act must take place exclusively within marriage" (Catechism)
  3. Church of England: could lead to unwanted pregnancies
  4. Conservative Evangelicals: "Do not commit adultery" (Exodus 20) and St Paul taught that sexual immorality is unacceptable
2. Marriage Service
  1. Forever-binding: sacrament as God is witness "In the presence of God"
  2. Raising a family: "foundation of family life"
  3. Declare/celebrate love: "will you love him/her?"
  4. Exclusive commitment: "unending love and faithfulness"
Family
1. Teachings
  1. "Honour your father and mother" (Exodus 20)
  2. "Parents bring your children up in the instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6)
  3. Main purpose of marriage to bring up children in the Christian faith
2. Keeping Together
  1. Baptism/dedication: parents promise to raise children lovingly as Christians
  2. Church schools: learning Christian values in safe environment
  3. Family Counselling: Catholic Marriage Advisory Council
  4. Support for elderly/handicapped children: Methodist Homes for the Aged
Homosexuality
1. Evangelicals: "You shall not lie with a man as with a woman that is an abomination" (Leviticus 18)
2. Roman Catholics: not as God intend as practices can not produce children "Homosexual persons are called to chastity" (Catechism)
3. Quakers: Church has no say in people's private lives, heterosexuality and homosexuality are no different
4. Different views: biblical interpretation, changes in modern society, role of the church, choice or design
