Rainfall
Why Does Johannesburg get little Rainfall?
because the air is sinking at the other side of
the mountain. so it wont rise and condense
so it wont rain.
Why does Lesotho get so much rain?
1. Moist winds from the ocean rise above the hills
2. Condenses into clouds (colder with height)
3. Relief Rainfall.
4. waters collected into the dam
5. Large surface area so it evaporates again.
6. Relief Rainfall happens again.
A trans Boundary Water Issue
For Lesotho
Advantages
Making Money, helps families (7000 people with jobs), producing 75%
of the countries income, money paid by world bank, help to develop a
very poor country.
Disadvantages
Rise in AIDS, prostitution and alcoholism, taking fields and crop space away from people,
short-term still struggling with water shortages and poor sanitation, no local people can
access the water from the dams, people displaced, government have to pay loan back to
world bank, food supply issues.
For South Africa
Advantages
Enough water for swimming pools and luxuries, better roads, better health, more water for
industry and better economy, better access to clean water, rise from 83 to 87% of people
with access to clean water, help to develop a country that is very poor.
Disadvantages
Johannesburg has no water source, large population/no rainfall
Peoples Views
Lesotho Farmer... they would not be happy about it as they
may lose grazing and farming land so they would lose lots of
crops, not only food for their families but they may sell crops so
they wouldn't make any money
Lesotho Government Minister... would be happy as they would be thinking
about how much money the town would make from collecting and selling
water to Johannesburg standards would improve
Johannesburg Residents... would be happy as they have plenty of water and they can have all
the luxuries such as swimming pools they would like, they also have a constant supply of
water and wouldn't lose land. However they would be unhappy at the cost of the water.
