Resumen del Recurso

Natural Selection + Genetic Modification
  1. genetic engineering
    1. involves the use of enzymes + vectors (carriers)
      1. involves modifying an organisms geneome (its DNA) to introduce desirable characteristics
        1. enzymes can be used to cut up or join DNA. vectors can be used to insert DNA into other organisms
        2. selective breeding
          1. when features that are useful to humans are bred into plants and animals
            1. also called artificial selection
              1. disadvantages:
                1. reduced variation (reduction in different alleles
                  1. health problems in animals
                    1. a change in the environment could wipe out the species
                    2. not just used in agriculture but also in medical research
                    3. tissue culture
                      1. parent plant -> tissue removed from tip of the plant -> tissue placed on a medium containing growth hormones
                        1. tissue culture in medicine
                          1. used to study viruses + medicine effects
                            1. dont need to test on humans
                              1. to avoid rejection in human replacement tissue
                            2. evolution
                              1. pendadactyl limb:
                                1. 5 phlanges
                                  1. a humerous
                                    1. a radius
                                      1. an ulna
                                      2. ARDI -> LUCY -> HOMO HABILUS -> HOMO ERECTUS -> HOMO SAPIENS (US!)
                                        1. organisms COMPETE for food, water, mates etc
                                          1. GENETIC VARIATION or MUTATION within a species means that some individuals are BETTER ADAPTED TO THEIR ENVIRONMENT.
                                            1. the BETTER ADAPTED INDIVIDUALS survive long enough to REPRODUCE + PASS ON THEIR GENES (SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST)
                                              1. over a LONG PERIOD OF TIME, the ADVANTAGEOUS GENES will INCREASE IN POPULATION
