Resumen del Recurso

Kibera
  1. Problems
    1. Housing- average size of shack in this area is 12ft x 12ft built with mud walls, a corrugated tin roof, dirt or concrete floor. The cost is about Ksh 700 per month (£6). Shacks often house up to 8 or more, many sleeping on the floor.
      1. Water- until recently Kibera had no water and it had to be collected from the Nairobi dam. The dam water is not clean and causes typhoid and cholera
        1. Sewage- in most of Kibera there are no toilet facilities. One latrine (hole in the ground) is shared by up to 50 shacks.
          1. Medical facilities- in Kibera there are no government clinics or hospitals
            1. unemployment rate of 50%
              1. No rubbish collection- Rubbish litters the area as its not collected.
              2. Sollutions
                1. Water- now there are two main water pipes into Kibera, one from the municipal council and one from the World Bank.
                  1. Medical facilities- organisations such as AMREF, MSF, churches plus some others provide people with health care.
                    1. Charities develop low-cost roofing tiles made from sand and clay. Natural fibre added to soil to create blocks used for building (cheaper than concrete).
