Question Answer
"The future of humanity is going to bifurcate in two directions: Either it's going to become multiplanetary, or it's going to remain confined to one planet and eventually there's going to be an extinction event".
The founding ethos of Elon Musk's private spaceflight company SpaceX was to make life multi-planetary. He says that settling humans on other worlds such as Mars could preserve civilization if Earth were to experience a cataclysm, such as a large asteroid impact.
"I think we have a duty to maintain the light of consciousness to make sure it continues into the future".
Musk is famously worried about AI overtaking humans and is reported to have invested in DeepMind not to make money but to stay abreast of how rapidly the technology behind AI is developing. DeepMind has focused much of its research on deep reinforcement learning, which is an AI technique that combines deep learning—which is primarily for recognizing patterns—with reinforcement learning.
"When Henry Ford made cheap, reliable cars people said, 'Nah, what's wrong with a horse?' That was a huge bet he made, and it worked".
Elon leads all product design, engineering and global manufacturing of the company's electric vehicles, battery products and solar energy products. Since the company's inception in 2003, Tesla's mission has been to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.
"I think that's the single best piece of advice: constantly think about how you could be doing things better and questioning yourself".
The company was founded on the premise that traffic is awful but traveling above ground isn’t necessary—traffic woes could be "solved" by using the miles and miles of earth beneath roadways. The company’s goal is to reduce the cost of tunneling while also making production more efficient. The Boring Company hopes to achieve this by making smaller tunnels and creating its own high-powered boring machines.
"Over time I think we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence".
Neuralink, in particular, aims to build an incredibly powerful brain-machine interface, a device with the power to handle lots of data, that can be inserted in a relatively simple surgery. Its short-term goal is to build a device that can help people with specific health conditions.
"I'm interested in things that change the world or that affect the future and wondrous, new technology where you see it, and you're like, 'Wow, how did that even happen? How is that possible?"
OpenAI is a non-profit research company that aims to develop and direct artificial intelligence (AI) in ways that benefit humanity as a whole. It was created in part because of its founders’ existential concerns about the potential for catastrophe resulting from carelessness and misuse of general purpose AI.
