Why do some people react badly to medicines? | + Some people produce enzymes that break down medicines very quickly, & therefore need higher doses + Some people don't produce the enzymes they need to break down certain substances in their body, meaning they can be poisoned by medicine. |
How can genetic testing make this a thing of the past? | They could show whether people have genetic variants that code for these enzymes, & helps us match medicines to patients & their genomes. |
What other benefits are there of genetic testing? | They could reveal that a person has alleles that can lead to disease, allowing treatment to start early. |
What happens in whole-genome sequencing? | The complete sequence of bases in an individual's DNA is worked out |
What are some ethical arguments against genetic screening. | + people don't want to be worried about this information + NHS can't afford it + we shouldn't interfere w/ nature |
