What is a LINE? The path of a moving point.
What is a SHAPE? A two dimensional space, volume, mass, area enclosed by an outline.
What is a FORM? A three dimensional space, volume, mass area enclosed by an outline.
What is TEXTURE? The actual or the illusion of tactile value on the surface of an area.
What is VALUE? The degree of lightness or darkness given to an area.
What is COLOR? Illusory phenomena of light.
What is SPACE? The interval or measurable distance between two pre-established points.
What is REPETITION? The use of line, color or motif in more than one place in a composition.
What is BALANCE? An equal distribution of visual interest and attention.
What is EMPHASIS? Given to a center of interest, which might be the largest, brightest or lightest subject.
What is CONTRAST? Shows the differences between the elements of art.
What is UNITY? The harmony of all the visual elements in a composition.
What is POSITIVE SPACE? A space filled with recognizable objects, usually the main object in a composition.
What is NEGATIVE SPACE? The empty spaces left after the positive shapes have been laid down.
What is SYMMETRICAL BALANCE? Both sides of an object that are similar or the same; equal balance.
What is ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE? Both sides of an object are not the same, but they are still equal.
What are GEOMETRIC SHAPES? Shapes that have been created by mathematical laws (nameable shapes).
What are ORGANIC SHAPES? Free form shapes or natural shapes, less regular.
What is an OUTLINE? The outer edge of an object/shape.
What is CONTOUR LINE? Lines that describe all the edges of a form, inside and out.
What is a PATTERN? A repetitious use of the same element to create an overall design.
What is OVERLAPPING? One object covers part of a second object , indicating depth.
What is SIZE CHANGE? Large objects appear closer than smaller objects.
What is PLACEMENT? Objects placed low on the picture plane seem to be closer to the viewer, most distant shapes seem to be at eye level.
What are DETAILS? Objects with clear sharp edges and visible details seem closer, hazy outline with less details are farther away
What are CONVERGING LINES? Lines to show distance and depth as parallel lines move away from you. They seem to move closer together towards the viewer.
What are PARALLEL LINES? Lines that continue in the same direction, equal distance apart.
What are PERPENDICULAR LINES? Lines which meet and form right (90 degrees) angles
What is CHIAROSCURO? Continuous gradations of value, to create the illusion of form
What is HIGHLIGHT? The lightest value present on a surface.
What is LIGHT? Broad intermediate value between the more defined areas of highlight
What is SHADOW? A darker area created by the presence area of dark.
What is the CORE OF THE SHADOW? The most concentrated area of darkness.
What is REFLECTED LIGHT? Light bounced back from nearby surfaces.
What is CAST SHADOW? Shadows thrown by objects onto adjacent planes.
What is TRANSITIONAL VALUE? Shading which blends and changes within a shape.
What is GRADED? Value shading which changes in each shape.
What is HUE? Another word for color.
What is the COLOR WHEEL? The basic hues arranged in a circle to indicate the way they are mixed.
What is WHITE? The presence of all color.
What is BLACK? The absence of all color.
What are PRIMARY COLORS? The most essential colors from which all other colors can be mixed.
What are SECONDARY COLORS? Colors made by using equal amounts of two primary colors.
What are TERTIARY COLORS? Colors made by using varying amounts of two or more of the six colors (Primary + Secondary).
What is TINT? Adding white to a color.
What is SHADE? Adding black to a color.
What is MONOCHROMATIC? A color scheme that uses only one hue and the tints and shades of that hue.
What is COMPLEMENTARY? Colors directly across from each other on the color wheel.
What is ANALOGOUS? Colors that sit side by side on the color wheel.
What is TRIAD? Three colors spaced equally apart, forming a triangle.
What are WARM/COOL COLORS? Temperature colors, split by red-violet and yellow-green.
What is INTENSITY (CHROMA)? Adding the complement, the brightness or dullness of a color.
What is FOREGROUND? The part of the scene or representation that is nearest to and in front of the spectator.
What is MIDDLE GROUND? A standpoint or area midway between extreme or opposing positions, options or objective.
What is BACKGROUND? The part what lies behind objects in the foreground.
