Question | Answer |
Urbanisation | The process by which an increasing proportion of a population lives in urban settlements |
Industrialisation = Urbanisation | Countries become more urban as they develop economically. As a country industrialises the number of people living in urban areas tends to increase. |
Counterurbanisation | This is the process by which an increasing proportion of a population move out of urban environments and into the countryside/smaller settlements. |
Squatter Settlements | Squatter settlements are settlements of poor people who live in improvised dwellings made form scrap material |
Site and Service Schemes | These give people the chance to rent or buy a piece of land. The government then ensure that this land has high accessibility and service provision. The government offer low-interest loans in order to allow this. |
Self Help Schemes | These schemes give people the tools and training in order to allow them to improve their homes. Low-interest loans may be used to help fund these changes. These schemes also commonly give people legal ownership of their land for the first time. |
Rural Investment | Improving quality of life, infrastructure and service provision in rural areas is a common tactic to prevent rural urban migration. If this is prevented then it is unlikely that squatter settlements will ever form. So investment in rural; areas may also improve conditions in urban environments. |
