Question Answer
What does Dalton state? All things are made of atoms and atoms are small balls that cannot be broken down into smaller parts.
How does our knowledge, due to JJ Thompson, now disagree with Dalton? In 1897 in one of JJ Thompson's experiments he measured the mass of the particles in a (cathode) ray that turned out to be 1800 lighter than Hydrogen. Thus proving sub atomic particles
What did JJ Thompson's model state? How is this different? Thomson believed in a plum pudding model that composed of stationary negatively charged electrons in a soup of posative charge to balance it out.
How is our model of the atom different from Thompson's? The atom has a nucleus in the middle which consists of protons (+ charge) and neutrons (Neutral charge) (overall + charge) with electrons (- charge).
Where are the electrons in an atom? Electrons are in shells orbiting the atom. The first shell only contains 2 electrons and all the others contain 6
Why does the electronic configuration or the shells of electrons matter? The outer shell of electrons determine the reactivity of the element thus the group (on the periodic table) in which it is. (This is important for bonding)
What is the relative atomic mass of the sub atomic particles Neutron - 1 Proton - 1 Electron - 1/1835
What is the relative atomic energy of the sub atomic particles? Neutron = 0 (neutral) Proton = +1 Electron = -1
