Question | Answer |
What is the nervous system? | The nervous system is a communication network that controls other systems of your body, such as digestive and circulatory system. |
What are the main parts of the nervous system? |
The central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).

|
What is another name for nerve cells? | Neurons |
What does the Cns do? |
The Cns recieves information from all over the body, processes that information and then sends out messages telling the body how to respond.

What are nerve impulses? |
A signal transmitted along a nerve fibre. It consists of a wave of electrical depolarization that reverses the potential difference across the nerve cell membranes.

What are the 3 common types of neuron? |
1.Motor neuron
2.Sensory neuron
3.Connector neuron

What is a neurotransmitter? | A chemical substance which is released at the end of a nerve fibre by the arrival of a nerve impulse and, by diffusing across the synapse or junction, effects the transfer of the impulse to another nerve fibre, a muscle fibre, or some other structure. |
What is the cerebrum? | The cerebrum is the main part of the brain in humans and other vertebrates. Functionally, it obtains information from your surroundings and/or body and then sends that information to a specific part of the cerebrum. |
Where is the cerebellum located? | The cerebellum is located where your skull curves inwards. |
How many neurons does the brain contain? | The human brain contains about 100 billion neurons. Its average volume is 1200-1400ml |
What is FMRI? |
Functional magnetic resonance imaging.

What is MRI? | Magnetic resonance imaging. |
Describe the function of dendrites |
The dendrites branch out from the cell body and receive messages from other nerve cells, which are then sent on to the nerve body.

What are neurons covered in? |
Neurons are covered with an insulating layer of myelin sheath

What is a synapse? |
A junction between two nerve cells, consisting of a minute gap across which impulses pass by diffusion of a neurotransmitter.

What is a reflex action? |
Reflex actions are quick, automatic reactions that protect the body from danger ; also known as reflexes.

What is a vertebrae? | A vertebrae is bones that surround the spinal cord and provide attachment for muscles. |
What is a reflex arc? |
A reflex arc is the nerve pathway operating in a reflex action.

What are the parts that the cerebrum is made up of? | The cerebrum is made up of 2 parts called the right and left cerebral hemispheres. |
What is PET? | Positive emission topography |
