Question | Answer |
Why does a plant carry out photosynthesis? | To convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose using light energy |
What part of the plant cell carries out photosynthesis? | Chloroplast |
What is the green pigment called in the chloroplast that absorbs light energy? | Chlorophyll |
What controls the process of photosynthesis in a plant cell? | Enzymes |
What is the word equation for photosynthesis? |

What are the 3 limiting factors of photosynthesis? | Light intensity Temperature Carbon dioxide concentration |
Describe what is happening at points 1 and 2 in the graph.

Light (binary/octet-stream)
|
1. As the amount of light increases, so does the rate. The limiting factor is light. 2. Here, increasing the amount of light has no affect on the rate. The limiting factor is now carbon dioxide or temperature. |

Co2 (binary/octet-stream)
|
1. As the concentration of carbon dioxide goes up, so does the rate. The limiting factor is carbon dioxide. 2. Here, increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide has no affect on the rate. Light or warmth is now the limiting factor. |
Describe what is happening at points 1 and 2 in the graph.

Temp (binary/octet-stream)
|
1. As temperature increases, so does the rate because photosynthetic enzymes work best in the warmth. Here, the limiting factor is temperature. 2. Most plant enzymes are destroyed at about 45°C. Here, photosynthesis stops and the rate falls to zero. The enzymes denature (active site changes shape). |
What is the procedure to test a leaf for starch? | 1. Kill the leaf using boiling water 2. Use ethanol to decolour the leaf (leaf turns white) 3. Wash leaf to soften 4. Use Iodine to test for the presence of starch (iodine will turn black if starch present) |
How does the plant use glucose that is produced during photosynthesis? | Respiration; Converted to starch for storage; Used to make cellulose, proteins and oils. |
