Question | Answer |
Vital Signs | A Person's Temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure. (abbreviated as T, P, R, BP) *pain is often included as the 5th vital sign, not covered until CH. 38 |
Hypothermia | Low Body Temp |
Hyperthermia | High Body Temp |
Afebrile | Without Fever |
Febrile Fever | (Pyrexia) An increase above normal body temp Extreme High about 104 F |
Peripheral Pulse | Throbbing sensation that can be felt over a peripheral artery, such as the carotid or radial artery |
Bradycardia | Pulse rate <60 b/min |
Dysrhythmia | Irregular pattern of heart beats |
Pulse Deficit | when a peripheral rate is lower than an apical heart rate. |
Resiprations | Measured in vitals called ventilation. count of breaths per minute |
Eupena | normal, unlabored breathing |
Tachypnea | increased resp rate |
Bradypnea | decreased resp rate |
Apnea | refers to a period of no breathing |
hyperventilation | increase in rate and depth of breathing |
Dyspnea | difficult of labored breathing |
orthopnea | when dyspnea people can breath easier in an upright position |
Blood Pressure | force of moving blood against the arterial walls. |
Systolic Pressure | Highest pressure, created with ventricular contraction, or systole. |
diastolic pressure | lowest pressure on arterial walls. created during diastole or relaxation of the ventricles. |
pulse pressure | the differences between the systolic and diastolic pressure. SP-DP=PP |
Orthostatic Hypotension Postural Hypotension | When going from sitting to standing, the BP drops. Systolic BP drops 20 mmhg or Diastolic BP drops 10 mmhg (within 3 minutes) |
