Question Answer
What is the relative charge of a NEUTRON? What is its relative mass? The NEUTRON relative charge is 0. Remember, NEUTRONS are NEUTRAL. Simple. The relative mass of a NEUTRON is 1.
Explain what is meant by the term "ISOTOPES". ISOTOPES are different forms of the same ELEMENT, which have the same number of PROTONS but different numbers of NEUTRONS.
True or false? Most of the mass of an ATOM is located in the NUCLEUS. True. ELECTRONS have virtually no mass.
Why do ATOMS have no charge? ATOMS have the same number of PROTONS as ELECTRONS. Because the charges on PROTONS (+1) and ELECTRONS (-1) are opposite and equally sized, they cancel each other out.
How many NEUTRONS does an ATOM of the ELEMENT on the left have? Number of NEUTRONS = MASS number - ATOMIC number = 88-38=50.
Why is the RELATIVE ATOMIC MASS of CHLORINE not a whole number? CHLORINE has more than one ISOTOPE. RELATIVE ATOMIC MASS is an average that takes into account the different MASSES and ABUNDANCES of all the ISOTOPES that make up an ELEMENT.
Freda is building a model of an ATOM. She wants to use her prize turnip as the NUCLEUS. The turnip has a RADIUS of 20cm. What will the RADIUS of the whole ATOM be? The RADIUS of an ATOM is around 10,000 times the size of the RADIUS of the NUCLEUS. So 20 cm x 10,000 = 200,000 cm (or 2 km - hopefully Freda has a large garden).
TIP: YOU CAN'T TRUST ATOMS - THEY MAKE UP EVERYTHING. BUT TRUST ME ON THIS, YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR PROTONS FROM YOUR NEUTRONS IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND ALL THIS CHEMISTRY STUFF. SORRY. :-)
