Question Answer
Background information It is a developing country in eastern Africa. Since the 1980s, Ethiopia has suffered from multiple droughts across various areas of the country. The worst periods of drought have been during 1984, 1994, 2004 and 2014-16
Causes Ethiopia relies on two periods of rain throughout the year Since 1980 the short rain season has been getting shorter and increasingly delayed. This is likely due to the warming of the Indian Ocean, where rises air loses more moisture as rainfall. Dryer air moves westward and descends over East Africa , causing drought
Social effects Death of livestock caused a food crisis People eat less, become weak from malnutrition and are more vulnerable to disease Girls have to walk further to get water so cannot go to school Long grasses used for roofing cannot grow, so homes are unprotected
Economical effects Loss of income for farmers due to death of livestock and crops and price of maize increased
Environmental effects Loss of habitat for fish and wildlife due to low water levels Increased disease in animals Migration of wildlife Loss of 200,000 hectares of forest every year due to forest fires Extinction of some species e.g. Grevy zebras Damage to soil
Individual response Large charity events like Live Aid have helped raise awareness and money
Organisational response Aid agencies such as Oxfam and UNICEF are helping people get water supplies Education charities are trying to help people get jobs in urban areas Celebrities came together to write the song Band Aid which was the Christmas number one. All of the money made from the song went to stop the famine in Ethiopia
Governmental responses Overseas governments have given aid e.g. the USA gave US$128.4 million in food aid for Ethiopians in 2015
