Question Answer
Tourism Why is tourism in the UK increasing?
Tourism 1. Due to the London 2012 Olympics the UK received an influx of tourists. These tourists also visited attractions while they were here such as: The Big Ben and The London Eye, further creating income for the country and making the tourists want to visit again
Tourism 2. The recession also means many people are earning less money and cannot afford holidays abroad. However, this means most people visit UK destinations providing more money for the UK economy.
Tourism 3. Many countries, such as China have a rapidly increasing amount of disposable income (money that can be spent on materialistic things such as designer clothes, Iphones etc) and is up by 12% per year - more likely to visit UK for a holiday
The Butler Model - Stage 1: Exploration The place gets very few tourists and therefore has no services for this. Adventurous people looking for new experiences often find the place and tell other people how good it is and these people then start to visit too. An example from this stage is Chile.
Stage 2: Involvement Services/businesses open due to an increase in tourists e.g. shops, hotels, cafes, guides, transport etc. An example from this stage is Guatemala.
Stage 3: Development More people and companies find out about the place and money is invested into the region. Large hotels and package holidays are created, making the number of tourists swell dramatically - the place and the roads become busier. An example from this stage is Florida.
Stage 4: Consolidation The local economy is dominated by tourism and most people work in this sector meaning other sectors such as fishing and farming suffer. Traffic problems occur, people believe tourists are taking over. Tourist season = packed. An example is Early Mediterranean coastal resorts.
Stage 5: Stagnation The place becomes overcrowded and there is competition from other resorts. Beaches can be full of rubbish and dirty which puts people off visiting - people visit other places. Some businesses shut down and others are threatened. An example is Costa del Sol.
Stage 6: Rejuvenation "A cash injection" comes from a big company. This allows a resort to build attractions which will attract the tourists to the place again e.g. The Pleasure Beach at Blackpool. Jobs created and resort is reported in newspapers again.
OR Stage 6: Decline The place begins to look run down and isn't looked after very well decreasing the number of tourists that visit. Holidays are cheaper here. Businesses shut down. Most people stay away.
