Why does infant mortality effect birth rate? -There is a lower chance of children surviving -Have more children for more help working on farms for example Link: cost-benefit of children, economic development
Why does education effect birth rate? -Reduces family size -Consumer society -Contraception -Women working -Sanitation and hand washing reduce disease
Why does the cost-benefit of children effect birth rate? -Look after in old age -Expensive (£200,000 in UK to raise a child) -Agriculture (labour)
Why do attitudes to women effect birth rate? If the male is dominant then they might have more children than the woman wanted
Why does religion and culture effect birth rate? -Promote large families, continue teachings -Against contraception
Why do government policies effect birth rate? Pronatal (France) Antinatal (China, Kerala)
Why does welfare provision effect birth rate? -pensions -Care by family or by governement
Why does the structure of the population and the age of marriage effect birth rate? Younger=more time=morechildren
What is death rate? The average number of deaths per 1000 per year.
Factors influencing mortality? -Disease outbreak (HIV and Aids) -Natural disasters -Health care -Level of development -Diet -Drug & alcohol abuse -Education -Climate (spread of diseases, droughts) -Structure of population (older=dying more) -Sanitation (stop spread of cholera) -Medical advances (penicillin) -Communication & infrastructure (get to hospitals) -War
What is fertility rate? The average number of children a woman will give birth to in her lifetime.
What is infant mortality rate? The average number of deaths per 1000 births before the age of 1 per year.
What is life expectancy? The average age a baby is expected to live to.
What is migration rate? The number of immigrants compared to the number of emigrants in an area per 1000 per year. (positive=more people entering)
What is population density? The number of people per unit area.
