What is a tributary? A, typically smaller, river that connects to a bigger river.
What is a drainage basin? The area drained by a river and it's tributaries.
What is the area where two rivers connect called. A confluence.
What is the source of a river? The area where a river starts.
What are the two most common sources of a river? Springs and glaciers.
What is the mouth of the river? The area where the river ends and goes into a sea or a lake.
What is a river estuary? Its the end part of the river before the mouth which is tidal. This only happens when the mouth leads to a sea.
What is a water shed? It's the high ground that separates two drainage basins.
What are the three stages of a river called? What are its characteristics? Upper stage: Steep slope, V-Shaped valley, steep sides, narrow floor, no meanders. Middle stage: Gentle slope, wide river channel, medium meanders. Lower stage: Almost no slope, widest river channel, large meanders.
What is river erosion? Fast flowing water breaks down material from the sides of the river. Water erosion typically occurs in the upper stage.
What is river transport? The water stream carries material which it broke down in the upper stage. River transport occurs after river erosion in the upper stage.
What is river deposition? The transported material leaves the water stream as it reaches the mouth of the river.
