Primordial Follicles
A. Primordial Follicles B. Primary Follicles
Secondary Pre-Antral Follicles
Secondary Antral Follicles
What are the features of this tertiary follicle?
Which follicle is this? Mature (Pre-Ovulatory) Follicle
A. Ciliated Epithelium B. Smooth Muscle (This is the epididymis)
Primordial Follicles
Primary Follicles - primary oocyte surrounded by a single layer of cuboidal-shaped granulosa cells
Secondary Antral Follicles
Mature (Pre-ovulatory) Follicle
Mature (Pre-Ovulatory) Follicle
Stratum Functionalis (functional layer) of the Uterus - comprised of simple columnar epithelium and connective tissue lamina propria with uterine glands
Stratum Basalis of the Uterus - lower third of the mucosa that is retained during menstruation and regenerates the functional layer
Myometrium of the Uterus - thick layers of smooth muscle
Tunica Albuginea - the dense connective tissue surrounding the testis
Seminiferous Tubules - each lobule contains 1 to 4 highly-coiled seminiferous tubules lined by a germinal epithelium that is the site of sperm production.
Seminiferous Tubules - the most immature spermatogonia are closest to the basement membrane (periphery) of the tubule, and as meiotic divisions continue the more mature spermatids continue to move towards the lumen, undergoing spermiogenesis to eventually be released into the lumen as structurally mature sperm
Interstitial Cells (Leydig Cells) of the Testes - are clustered between seminiferous tubules and produce testosterone
Epididymis
What is this structure, what epithelial tissue lines the lumen, and what muscle surrounds it? Epididymis - is lined with pseudostratified columnar epithelium with long stereocilia at the luminal surface - Surrounded by smooth muscle for peristalsis to move sperm
