Justinian An emperor that sought to revive the ancient empire (Rome).
Justinian's Code A collection of Roman laws organized by the Byzantine emperor Justinian and later served as a model for the Catholic Church and medieval monarchs.
Theodora -Was Justinian's wife and adviser. -She was a shrewd politician that was not afraid to speak up against people.
Hagia Sophia -Means Holy Wisdom -A church that served as a cathedral of the eastern Orthodox Christianity, A Roman Christian cathedral, and an Islamic mosque.
Icons A holy image of Christ, Mary, or a saint venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
The Great Schism -The official split between the Roman Catholic and Byzantine Churches that occurred in 1054. -Eastern: Greek Orthodox -Western: Roman Catholic Church
Autocrat A sole ruler with complete authority. Example: Justinian
Patriarch The highest Church official in the Roman and Byzantine empires.
Herodotus and Thucydides Greek historians who were concentrated on writing about their own times. They preserved the classic works of ancient Greece and Rome. In addition they produced their own great novels.
