Question | Answer |
Electric toothbrush | Removes more plaque/biofilm per sec. May have a timer or different vibration settings. Bristles will move in a circular or up & down motion. |
Manual toothbrush | Various sizes and styles, tuft shape, bristles, and handle angle. Removes plaque and biofilm from smooth surfaces. |
Floss | Removes biofilm from between the teeth, reduces interproximal bleeding and caries. |
Floss threaders | Used to remove biofilm and debris from under fixed bridges and ortho appliances. |
Interproximal brushes | Inserted between the teeth from the facial side and are moved with a short back-and-forth strokes. Then repeated on the lingual side. |
Water irrigation device (waterpik) | Used to clean debris from ortho brackets. Does not remove biofilm and should not replace brushing & flossing. |
Disclosing solution | Temporarily colors biofilm to make it visible & therefore easier to remove. |
