What is a Pathogen? A microorganism that enters the body and causes disease
What are the two main types of bacteria? Bacteria and Viruses
Bacteria Small living cells Produce rapidly Make you puke by damaging cells
Viruses They ARE NOT CELLS They replicate themselves ;( by invading your cells and using their machinery to make copies of themselves
What stops nasties getting into your body? Skin, Hair and Mucus
What also stops microorganisms from getting in through cuts/ wounds? Plateletes in your blood (small fragments of red blood cells) help by clotting
What do white blood cells do? They engulf foreign cells or produce antibodies or produce antitoxins
How did Semmelweis cut deaths? By using ANTISCEPTICS
What happens when bacteria becomes resistant to antibiotics? MUTATIONS of pathogens produce new strains/reproduce population increases and BAM!
