Question Answer
Personification Writing about non-human objects as though they had human characteristics gives them a kind of life. It brings it alive and makes it simple to understand. It suggests links to associated behaviour.
Pun It creates a tone of thinking or cleverness and makes it more interesting and memorable. It makes the reader laugh
Repetition Creating emphasis, rhythm, or creating a structure that builds to a climax.
Metaphor/ Simile An effective way of making the subject more vivid and helps visualise.
Rhetorical Question Makes the reader think of the answer, it engages them and involves them in the text.
Onomatopoeia Adds another sense (hearing) to the writing, and so making the scene more real.
Imperative Using commands is effective because it makes clear what action the reader is expected to take and provokes a reaction.
Alliteration Sound effects are memorable and catchy. The repeated sounds draw attention to the words and give them more status.
Hyperbole Exaggeration- It makes the point more powerful and helps visualise the idea.
Triplet/ listings Adds detail, makes the subject more interesting and adds impact as the words increase in meaning.
Personal Pronouns I,We - create a feeling of honest confession and togetherness, sharing. You - direct connection with the reader, personalises. He, She, They - distances, makes them feel like the enemy.
Jargon Specialised language for a particular situation makes the text seem important, reliable, knowledgeable - maybe even trustworthy.
Colloquial Language Words that are chatty, informal , create a friendly and relaxed tone.
Symbols Using a common object to represent another thing or idea is effective because of the associations between the two objects or ideas: can simplify a complex idea: includes visual language which is universal.
Adjectives Describe and provide more information about the noun.
Simple sentences Information snappy and quick, which can make certain points 'stand out' more or give variation within the text to keep the reader interested. Short sentences are also effective in building tension and to make a dramatic point.
Complex sentences They create an atmosphere, express more complicated thoughts, develop ideas further, add more detail and descriptions.
Compound sentences They create a feeling of rush, urgency or disjointedness. They may also give the impression that all ideas are equally important
Facts Demonstrate or emphasise a writer's point by providing evidence to support claims.
Opinion Emphasise the point of a writer but make the message more personal rather than completely factual.
Statistics Emphasise and demonstrate the point of the writer
Anecdotes Enhances the argument. It makes the text more personal and connects to the reader’s experiences.
Quotes They can create added authority to make the text more convincing. Adds credibility to an argument.
Emotive Language This helps involve the reader and make them feel a particular way. It creates an emotional response from the reader ( eg anger, shock, guilt ). It is often used to manipulate readers’ feelings It can create a positive or negative effect.
