Staph. aureus (G+ve cocci, clusters) - cellulitis (emp Rx: non-severe Flucloxacillin PO 500mg, 6-hrly / severe Flucloxacillin IV 2g, 6-hrly. See GB), impetigo. Strep. pyogenes (G+ve cocci, chains, B-haemolytic) - cellulitis (emp Rx as above), impetigo.
1531 What is an abscess? It 'is a liquid collection of pus lined by granulation tissue and fibrosis (if chronic).' OHOCS p176.
1532 Describe the general principles for managing an abscess. Imaging to locate if deep (CT, MRI, US). Incision, drainage, possible ABx Rx if having systemic effects. OHOCS p176.
