Question Answer
What is the binomial nomenclature and why is it essential in the classification of living organisms? It is a system used to assign names to animals and plants using two terms; genus and species (family name and specific name) It is an international ID system, so there is little room for ID error as it is very specific.
List the characteristics of adult stage Phylum Arthropoda -hardened exoskeleton -usually 2-3 distinct body segments -usually one pair of compound eyes -usually one pair segmented antennae -muscles attached to exoskeleton
Which classification is more specific, Phylum or Species, and why? Species is more specific because it is a more narrow scope of identification. Phylum IDs a group within the animal Kingdom, species IDs the exact name if an individual organism. Species is the final step for naming an organism.
What characteristics do arthropods share that put them into the same classification? Segmented body and jointed limbs
Give 5 examples of Crustacea Sow bug Lobster Crayfish Crab Shrimp
An example of Diplododa Millipede
An example of Chilopoda Centipede
Give 5 examples of Arachnida Spiders Mites Ticks Scorpions Harvestman (daddy long legs)
Give 5 examples of Insecta (Hexapoda) Beetles Mosquitoes Ant Bee Butterfly
What are the stages of complete metamorphosis? Egg, Larva, pupa, adult
What are the stages of partial metamorphosis? Egg, nymph/naiad, adult
What are the characteristics of class Insecta? -3 pair of legs -3 body segments (had, thorax, abdomen) -1 pair antenna -0-2 pair of wings -over 1 million catalogued in the world
What are the characteristics of class Arachnida? -4 pair legs -2 body segments (cephalothorax, abdomen) -lack antenna
What are the Characteristics of class Chilopoda? -1 pair legs per body segment -predacious -centipedes
What are the characteristics of class Diplododa? -2 pair legs per body segment -plant feeders -millipedes
What are the characteristics of class Crustacea? -mostly aquatic (gills) -at least 5 pair legs -Crab, lobster
