Question | Answer |
Map Projection | method used to transfer features of the globe onto the flat surface of a map. |
Mercator projection | type of map projection in which compass bearings are correct. However, it is unsuitable for general use because of distortions of distances, areas, shape of landmasses and oceans. |
Equal Area Map projection | map projection, used by most nations and international organizations in which the correct sizes of all countries are shown in relation to one another, such as on a Winkel Tripel projection, thereby avoiding most size distortions. |
Winkel Tripel projection | best map projection for providing a balance between size and shape. |
Map | representation of the Earths features drawn on a flat surface. |
Scale | measurement on a map that represents an actual distance on the earths surface |
General Purpose map | map that contains many different types of information |
Thematic map | map containing information on only one topic or theme |
Topographic map | large scale map showing both natural and human made features |
Compass point | direction on a compass, such as South or North |
Large Scale Map | map that shows a large amount of detail of a small area |
Small Scale Map | map that shows a small amount of detail of large area |

Map Grid | series of lines on a map that can be used to locate any place on a map |
Easting | first three figures in a map reference giving the east-west location |
Northing | last three figures in a map reference giving the North-South location |
Latitude | distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees. The equator is 0 degrees and the north pole is 90 degrees north latitude |

GPS (global positioning system) | satellite navigation system that is used to compute the exact latitude and longtitude position of any place on earth. |
Pedology | the study of soils in their natural envionment |
Time Zone | division of the earths surface, usually extending across 15 degrees longtitude, that establishes a uniform time |
International Date Line | line that generally follows the 180 degrees line of longtitude where one day ends and the next begins. |
