Question Answer
FLEXION- this happens when the bones forming the joint move CLOSER together. For example: when preparing to kick a ball in football, the lower part of your leg moves closer to the upper part of the leg. The angle at the joint DECREASES.
EXTENSION- this happens when the bones forming a joint move away from each other For example: following through after kicking a football. The lower part of the leg moves away from the upper part of the leg. The angle at the joint increases.
ABDUCTION- the movement of a limb AWAY from the midline of the body. For example: at the shoulder when reaching out sideways to intercept a netball. 'abducted' means taken away.
ADDUCTION- the movement of a limb TOWARDS the midline of the body. For example: at the hip in the cross-over leg action when throwing a javelin. The leg comes back towards the midline of the body. ADDuction- add to the body
ROTATION- when the bone at a joint moves around its own axis, making a circular movement. For example: at the shoulder when swimming front crawl. The arm rotates in a circular motion.
