Question Answer
Protien A molecule made up of long chains of amino acids.
What do proteins do? Proteins act as structural components of tissues, as hormones, as antibodies and as catalyst.
What is an Enzyme and how do they work? Enzymes are proteins. The amino acid chains are folded to form the active site.
How does increasing the temperature affect your enzymes? Increasing the temperature increases rate of enzymes.
Where are your digestive enzymes made? Digestive enzymes are produced by specialised cells in glands and in the lining of the gut. They work outside of the body cells in the gut itself.
How are enzymes involved in the digestion of your food? Different enzymes catalyse the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and fats into smaller, soluble molecules during digestion.
What is bile and why is it so important in digestion? Bile is a greenish-yellow alkaline liquid. Bile is important because it neutralises acids and emulsifies fats.
How does biological detergents work? It contains proteases and lipases. These enzymes break down fats and proteins in the stain.
What enzymes are used in the industry? Proteases, carbhoydrases and isomerase are all used in the food industry.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using enzymes in detergents? Enzymes in detergents break down biological stains such as sweat. They work at low temperature so uses less electricity, which is cheaper and enviromentally friendly. The disadvantage is using low temperature to wash with biological detergents may not be as good as killing pathogens on the clothes.
Can doctors use enzymes to help keep you healthy? Yes because enzymes can be produced industrially, both to diagnose and to treat disease.
