Foreshadowing | The use of clues to hint at future events in a story. |
Imagery | colorful and descriptive language used to appeal to one or more of the five senses. Visual Imagery: Sight. Aural/Auditory Imagery: Sound Olfactory Imagery: Smell Gustatory Imagery: Taste Tactile Imagery: Touch, Tangibility. |
Verbal Irony | A character says one thing but means the opposite. Sarcasm. |
Dramatic Irony | When the audience understands more about the events in a story than a character. |
Situational Irony | When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected to happen. |
Motif | a dominant pattern of repetition of subjects, objects, or ideas that runs through a piece of literature. Often a motif can assume a symbolic importance. |
Narrator | Anyone who recounts a story to someone else. Ex: Third person |
Novella | A short novel, usually under 150 pages. |
Plot diagram | the sequence of events in the story (exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution.) |
Point of View | the perspective from which an author lets the reader view the action of a narrative. |
Setting | the location and time period where the story takes place. |
Symbol | repeated image, idea, or object within the text that stands for something other than itself. |
Theme | a timeless and universal idea that is expressed throughout a work. It must be more than one word. |
Register | refers to how formal or informal the language and tone of the text is. |
